Makeover on a Budget

Design goals:

To update the look of the home without the expense of a remodel. To give the house a bit more character and to fit in with the neighborhood of 1930's style homes. The owners wanted to do as much of the work as possible themselves.

Challenges:

To transform a 1960's concrete block (no stucco) house into a charming home without remodeling. To transition the traditional architecture to the contemporary interior.

Concept:

A rich chocolate brown was chosen from the traditional Arts & Crafts palette to fit in with the other houses and to give more weight to the small home.

A new garage door was selected to add charm. Heavy white molding was added to provide an element of architectural detail to to highlight the new white windows and doors. The shutters were removed to give the illusion of a larger house and to highlight the windows. Simple white window boxes were added to provide charm and to introduce color since the door was predominantly glass and the shutters had been removed.

Result:

The owners and neighbors were pleased with the results and were amazed that the changes didn't cost very much.  This is the house that was mentioned in the staging section of this website - the one that sold immediately!

Use-What-You-Have Budget Makeover

Design Goals:
To create an inviting, simple, living and dining area for a family with two young children using the existing furnishings. To select colors to coordinate with the family room, as both rooms are seen from the foyer.

Challenges:
The family was accustomed to living with white walls and was apprehensive to major color change. Accessories needed to be minimal.

Concept:
A subtle warm golden beige hue was chosen for the walls to coordinate with the wall-to-wall carpet; to pull out the gold tone from the uphostery fabric that also had taupe, olive green and black; to enhance the natural teak furniture; and to blend with the to-be-purchsed 2-inch wood blinds.

A deep red was applied to one wall for four reasons: to create a separate dining area; to minimize the appearance of the dining room when viewing the room from the foyer; to allow the living room its own space; and to coordinate with the family room leather furniture.

Result:

The room makes a favorable first impression, as it is the first room to be seen when entering the house. The whole family uses the room every day. Before the makeover it was used as a storage area and to play on the floor. The family feels peaceful and happy in the room, and less stressed when planning social gatherings.
